Information
When I found my dog I didn't have the advantage of the
computer. He's
over 6 years old now. I found him as a puppy that appeared suddenly
in my neighborhood. People started calling me because they thought
he was mine. (I already had a black puppy same age and size) I
believe mine was dumped as a puppy. I live in a very small town and
the flyers and posters received no response. We get a number of
dumped dogs here because people know we provide loving homes. Almost
everybody in my neighborhood is a multiple dog owner. Luckily for
the dogs we do give them homes. It's a sad thing but it happens.
I've had dogs "snatched" years ago when it was rampant in our area.
Now, with the internet, I think your efforts are well founded. I believe
you're on the right track with this quiz. Thanks for the
good feelings you've created.
thank you for your input ed.
Send emails to Dog related groups on
the internet? didn't before but
I
would now.
A: I would contact the local animal control, take
the
dog in to be scanned for a microchip, and put an ad in
the paper.
All of the above PLUS I would:
1. Send banner to every Vet clinic, Groomer and Dog trainer in town -
Who
better to know a dog and their owner?!
2. Place banner on any and every bulletin board.
3. Ask any pet supply store if they would place a banner in their window
or
somewhere else an owner would see.
I have done all of these, but the one that has really worked best was
the
vet and groomer notifications.
Here's my answers:
1. Phone rescue shelters in the area, place a newspaper
ad. I would also
try to find a place on the internet to post it too.
2. Probably go through a search engine, such as dogpile or ask jeeves.
3. Found pets, also look for a post under lost pets.

I would hold till I found someplace for
him to go
Place banners on streets in your area? No. No time. Stupid homeowner
group won't allow it anyway.
I always ask the local kids, all ages. They tend to know
animals better than most. I also know the animal control people, and
there are some local deputies who also are animal nuts. If the add were
free, I would place one. But, realize, in my case, all this is
speculative as I have rescued wolves, and cannot keep a dog here for
that reason.
Any other comments?petfinder search is
first, then petfbi(ohio page) then look through petfbi's links
these are national). Search local newspapers, call
all shelters in surrounding counties.
I would click on to various websites (the browser
on my other computer has extensive dog related sites some of which have
lost/found dog listings.

Save just one, until there are
none...adopt a pet today.
As many as three thousand dogs and cats are born in the US every hour.
In the US alone, approximately 7.6 million cats and dogs are euthenized
each year. You can help end this tragedy. Please have your pet spayed
or neutered!
If I found
a dog (in my life I have found 2 dogs and have searched for
the owners), I would look in the paper and look for signs in the street.
I might look on the internet also. I would NEVER take a dog to a
shelter.
On the internet, I would do a search for "lost dogs" and then whatever
sites came up I would look thru those. I would post message on those
also. I use yahoo. I would say found dog.
In addition
to the foregoing answers, I do the following:
Take the Dog to my vet to check for an identifying chip
Search the local papers for a matching Lost Dog;
Search Lost Dog notices on the websites
Make 8 1/2 x 11 posters with color photos of the Found Dog and post them
at the local PetSmart store, local grocery stores, local gas stations,
local convenience stores, local gym

I have never lost a dog
(only time they got out, I was called because of my phone number on
their tags). However, we have found/rescued 3 dogs in the past 3 years.
We have kept/adopted 2 of the 3. The 3rd dog, we kept until we found a
home for him.

CALL THE LOCAL RADIO STATIONS AND PLACE A BROADCAST
ANNOUNCEMENT
If I found a lost dog I would take it to a vet to get scanned for a
micro-chip. If that didn't work I would call shelters and place ads in
papers, and on the net. I would type in "lost and found" and go from
there. In the past, when I reunited dog and owner I saw their "lost"
sign and then saw the dog. I tried to catch dog but he was to scarred so
I went back to sign and got phone # and called with his location. 10
min. later she got her dog back.
In response to your questions.
When I find a lost dog or cat, I call the local pounds and shelters and
advertise in the local newspapers.
I also call local rescue groups.
If I decided to search the web, I would use Yahoo. I'd us "Lost Dog"
If I found a lost animal,
I would
place banners around
the neighborhood, contact local shelters, place animal
on internet, tell local pets stores. I would go on
yahoo and put found dog. If you have any more you
would like to ask feel free to email me at any time.

Extra Information
The FIRST thing I look for is the
collar/tag, then you can call the home or vet and locate the owner
that way.
If these were not present, THEN I would
check for a tattoo,
THEN the classifieds and call the
pounds and shelters.
A last resort would be the chip-check,
and then probably because I could feel something under the skin. I
would watch for posters in the area and put up some found ones, as
well as a found want ad. I would contact people in the vicinity to see
if they knew the dog. I have lost my dog before. First I looked on
foot and by car and also
talked to people and police in the area. I then progressed to calling
the shelters and putting up my own posters (while driving around
looking), Unfortunately, the posters only helped me to recover the
body of my dog ("There's one that looks like that in the ditch down
the road...") She was mostly blind and probably never even saw the
car
coming. My dogs are now tattooed, wear tags, and we have a fenced yard
(3 to be precise).
The only draw-back to your lost dog site is that it can only help
those people who are on the net. It would be helpful to people who
lose their pets while traveling, if there was any way for them to know
about it.Good luck, Tammy
Good point Tammy the internet
has its limitations and also its advantages, so all avenues of finding a lost
dog should be explored, ed.
1. If you found a lost dog, what would you do? first
check for tags, then call county for info if it has a
tag on, if not, then I call local shelter to see if
anyone called in about it missing, if so I call the
number left at shelter, if not, I wait 3 days while
checking back with shelter and read the lost ads in
paper. If no one claims it, it goes to local shelter.
1. Place newspaper add & Send emails
to Dog related groups on the internet
& place found dog adds
2. overture, google ,yahoo
3. lost, lost dog
I put lost & found classified with the area in which I found the pet
into a
search, whatever comes up I check out lost adds then if no luck I place
a
found add. I can search & list for hours!
Also forgot to mention giving flyers to our
truck drivers as well.
Question 1 - probably all
Question 2 - search engine
Question 3- found dog
Place a ad in the local
newspaper, call the pound to see if any one is looking for the dog,
place posters in local areas.

SURVEY ANSWERS:
If you found a lost dog, what would you do? (My answers are in GREEN)
If it has tags, call the number listed. If only a rabies tag, call that
number. As a matter of fact, we have done this several times and once
reunited a 16 y/o deaf dog with its homebound owner.
Phone local rescue shelters?
Yes, definitely. Although I found out they will NOT come out and rescue
a cat from a tree. Done that myself!
Phone local dog council pound?
Yes, just to check but not to turn over to them. Our local police are
not much help.
Place banners on streets in your area? YES! done that, too.
Place newspaper add? YES! done that, too.
Send emails to Dog related groups on the internet? Definitely!
Place message on website? sorry, but we do not have one ..... yet.
Search engine? or other?
Yahoo - YES
Google - YES
Altavista - YES
Other? I am on several Samoyed lists, pet lists, pet prayer lists, etc.,
so I would put the info. on these with permission to cross-post.

what words would you put in the search engine?
FOUND (DATE), DOG/CAT, LOCATION. MY PHONE NUMBER OR E-MAIL ADDY.
CALLER MUST IDENTIFY SPECIFICALLY THEIR PET.
We (my hubby & I) are active members of NISA
(Northern Illinois Samoyed Assistance) so we are fairly well informed on
the ins and outs of rescue. We have two rescue Samoyeds of our own; one
is going on 11 and the other will be 3 in August. I train with a dog
training club and help out wherever I can.

If
you have found a 'one breed ' (purebred) dog - try to find Breed
specific
rescue clubs - they often have a lost and found section on their sites -
or
you can contact them and let them know the particulars of the animal you
found.
Of course - the first thing I do check is if the dog has a tattoo - if
it is
legible - there is no problem to follow it up - it may take some time
and a
lot of phone calls - but there is usually a national registry to find
where
the tattoo has come from.
If I found a
dog I would, place an ad in the local papers and I would call the local
veterinarians and shelters. And I would put ads up in the stores in the
area. I would also go to the internet and post any info through there.
I would go through any of the web sites I know of to place an ad for
this found dog. I would place it wherever I could think. I would place
it under found dog.
I would also talk to anyone I see to ask if they or anyone they know may
have lost a dog. I don't know what else I would do. I would keep it
until I found an owner. I would not turn it over to the shelter.
